On the third day, Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king’s hall.
Esther 5:1
Esther is a Jewish girl who becomes queen. She was an orphan, she wasn’t born into royalty. She didn’t grow up learning how to be a future queen. However, when she becomes queen she is able to abandon her previous circumstances and fully step into being royalty.
How does an orphan girl learn to be royalty? How does she effectively take on the royalty bestowed on her? We can parallel Esther’s story with our coming into the kingdom. Immediately we enter, we become royalty. But how do we live and act in accordance with the royalty that is our inheritance?
Take away:
We put on our robe
Before Esther goes in to do business with the king, she puts on her royal robe. This is significant. She wasn’t just putting on raiment; she was putting on her identity. She wasn’t standing before him as a poor orphan girl, she was standing before him as queen.
This is how we show up to the world. we show up as royalty. we remember to put on our God-given royalty.
God puts a robe on us, and we have to wear that robe in order to do business on behalf of the king.
I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. Isaiah 61:10 NLT
God puts a robe of righteousness on us. Righteousness is our royal robe. This becomes our identity, now everything we do flows from this.
We identify with our royalty
There is behavior that marks a royal. There is a way we will treat people when we know we are royalty.
Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3:12
Notice he says, because you are chosen… There is a way we behave when we know we are chosen. All these virtues reveal that we have fully identified with our royalty in God.
Because we are chosen, we have to abandon our orphan spirit. We have to live from a place of abundance. We walk in humility, we treat people with kindness, we show gentleness, and exercise patience with others. We not only put on our royal robes but also put on behavior that tells others we are royalty.
We reign with God
Our royalty has a purpose, we are supposed to reign on the earth.
You have made them a kingdom [ of royal subjects} and priests to our God, and they will reign on the earth,” Revelation 5:10 AMP
A king who isn’t reigning is no king at all. So if we say we are royalty there has to be proof that we are reigning. We reign with God.
I love how Romans 5:17b puts it. How much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
Contemporary English Version says… and so we live and rule like kings.
Good news translation says…will rule in life through Christ.
We are to reign in this life; a defeated life isn’t compatible with royalty. We have been given the ability to overcome life and live victoriously. Therefore we reign over sin, over the enemy, over difficulties; we reign over sickness, we reign over everything in this life through Him.
Our royalty is for service
We are not royalty so we can serve our own agendas. We are royals so that we can serve God in His kingdom. Our royalty has no purpose outside of His kingdom. Even when we reign in this world, it must be in His kingdom’s context and purposes.
For you have made them a kingdom and priests to God. Revelation 5:10 Royalty and priesthood cannot be separated.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
Peter doesn’t separate royalty and priesthood. He calls us a royal priesthood. We are all called into priesthood and the service of God with our lives.
NLT says, as a result, you can show others the goodness of God…
This is why we are royal priests- to show others the goodness of God. As we serve God and reign on this earth we are showing others how good God is and are testaments of what He can do for them too.
