The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”Genesis 18:10
Something is revealed in this passage. Even though Abraham and Sarah had been waiting for the promise a long time, God still let them know that the appointed time was next year.
Maybe you can relate you are in a season where you feel like things should have happened already but you are still holding on to the promise. Maybe you thought you would have the promise by now, but a year has passed, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years. And it feels like the more you believe the further the promise seems.
Maybe you thought by now you would have your dream career. Maybe you thought by now your business would have taken off. Maybe you thought you would be in your dream house. Maybe you thought you would be much further in life. Maybe you were sure by now you would be married or by now you would have a couple of kids… but you don’t have the promise yet.
Things to remember:
God chooses the appointed time, not us.
You say, “I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge with equity. Psalm 75:2 Even though we are beginning a new year and there is all this excitement going around of what this year holds. We have to remember that we don’t choose the timing of when things should happen God does. It’s very easy to get carried away by all the New Year declarations going around. Don’t get carried away by the excitement, trust in His timing and make sure you are doing what you are supposed to be doing. We partner with God by doing our part and getting ready for the appointed times.
2022 may be the appointed season for you. However, if 2022 isn’t the year the promise you’ve been waiting for happens, keep trusting God for His perfect timing and be faithful with what He has you doing in this season.
Sometimes, our flesh is in the way.
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. Genesis 18:11 In the physical it was impossible for the promise to happen.
Have you found yourself in a situation where all the things that gave you hope for the promise are gone? That you knew there is no way that this thing would happen unless God intervened?
God waited until there was no way they could say they made it happen to bring the fulfillment. God will wait until we are done trying to help Him. He will wait until we run out of all our great ideas. He will wait until we stop trying to manipulate and control the outcome to give us the promise.
Sometimes, the appointed time is just God waiting for us to get out of the way so He can glorify Himself with our lives.
Our participation is required.
We participate and partner with God through faith. Sarah had no faith in the promise. She had waited for so long she had become cynical about the promise.
If you’ve waited long for a promise in your life, a time will come where the enthusiasm and the confidence you once felt will be replaced by cynicism. When people tell you that God can do anything you will laugh at the absurdity of it. When you hear someone saying it is possible for you to receive the promise you will respond with utter cynicism.
So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “ After I am worn out, and my Lord is old, shall I have the pleasure? “ Genesis 18: 13 Sarah is so cynical she doesn’t hide her disbelief from the Lord. She had been waiting a very long time. Now, God says she was going to have what she has waited all her life for. God doesn’t blame her but He deals with her lack of faith.
Something happens between the declaration and the fulfillment. And even by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. Hebrews11:11 She went from laughing straight in God’s face to receiving the ability to conceive by faith. Sarah realized her participation was important and by faith choose to believe that God was able to fulfill what he had promised to her. Even though God seemed very late, she choose to believe. Even though in the physical it was impossible, she still chose to believe. And because she did, she was able to receive the power to partner with God to bring forth the promise.
We want God to bring the promise to pass without our participation. We don’t want to do the hard work of believing and staying in faith( because honey it will take all of you). We don’t want to go from faith-faith until we receive the promise. We want God to bypass our unbelief and just bring us the promise. But God is more interested in our participation by faith because that’s how we become sons and daughters.
Whatever you do in the season of waiting don’t lose faith. Your faith is required to bring the promise to fulfillment. We are encouraged; therefore don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. Hebrews 10:35 And to hold tightly to our hope in Him, let us seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering, For He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful[to His word]; Hebrews 10:23
It requires other people.
Sometimes it’s not the appointed time because the people who need to partner with us are not ready.
Maybe the resources you need are in the hands of people who need to hear God and God is working on their hearts. Maybe the money you need is in the hands of someone who needs to partner with God by faith. Maybe the relationship you are waiting for requires the other person to partner with God by faith and they aren’t there yet.
If we’ve done all we know to do, and still don’t have the promise. We need to add patience to our faith as we wait on all the things that need to tie up together for the promise to come to pass.
I pray that you will get to the appointed time and season for your promise, and receive what you have been waiting for by faith!
